The strongest objection
“Why build calendar + flight detection at all? Just notify riders when they land somewhere Waymo already operates.”
Because the calendar turns the ride tothe airport into an intentional check-in. It already knows the whole itinerary — flight, destination, even the hotel — so the inbound ride can pre-stage the outbound one: while you’re having a smooth trip to the gate, your destination ride is queued up, timed to how long Waymo expects checkout and customs to take, pre-filled and one tap to confirm when you land.
A landing-only ping can’t do that. It fires after you’ve landed, with none of the context to book ahead — and it only ever sees cities Waymo already serves, so it can’t feed expansion.
The bet: a great ride to the airport is the best moment to win the ride on the other end. Capturing both legs — plus the demand signal for cities that aren’t live yet — is worth the calendar permission in a way a cold landing-ping never could be.
The problem
Ride-hail ends at the curb. The airport leg — flight delays, security lines, gate changes — is a fragmented, high-anxiety black box across apps, and riders still manually schedule a pickup their calendar could already predict.
Metric that matters
Primary: share of airport rides that auto-arrange with no manual scheduling. Guardrail: rider trust — manual-override rate and complaints from mispredicted pickups. Leading: verified expansion-demand signups from inactive airports.
Key tradeoff
Automate pickup timing from flight + TSA data vs. keep the rider fully in control. Chose proactive nudges with a one-tap override, and cut fully-autonomous rescheduling to protect trust early.
Biggest risk
Flight-detection accuracy. One confidently-wrong delay prediction erodes trust faster than ten correct ones build it.
